Meet Adam Ryan: Insurance and Wealth Management Expert

Leadership & CultureCandidate Tips

As part of our weekly Meet the Team series, we’re giving you the chance to get to know the people who make Fortis Recruitment thrive, gaining insights into their careers and expertise. This week, we’re introducing Adam Ryan, our insurance and wealth management recruitment specialist. Adam’s journey into recruitment started with a twist of fate, but he’s since developed a deep knowledge of his sector, connecting candidates and clients with standout opportunities and talent. Here, he shares his path, industry insights, and what fuels his passion – both on and off the golf course.

What inspired you to pursue a career in recruitment?

Honestly, I needed a job! I had just moved to Dublin after a round the world trip, trying to sidestep the worst of the 2008/09 recession. My last role was as a Sales and Marketing Manager for a mortgage brokerage, but in the summer of 2010, lending had slowed down, so I wasn’t sure what was next. During an interview, the recruitment agent suggested I might be a good fit for recruitment, and she was right!

How long have you been with Fortis, and what is your favourite thing about working here?

I joined Fortis in March 2023, so I’m now 1 year and 7 months with the business. My favourite thing? We’re a young agency with a wealth of experience in the team, and I work alongside people I can learn from and who challenge me. I also feel a strong sense of purpose as we grow the business, which is serious work, but we manage to have a lot of fun along the way.

What area do you specialise in, and what do you enjoy most about recruiting for this sector?

I recruit within the insurance and wealth management sectors, which is where I started my recruitment career back in 2010, and I’ve been close to it ever since. Right now, I think the insurance sector is a fantastic space to work in, whether in broking or (re)insurance companies. There’s such variety here – one day I could speak to someone specialising in injury claims, and the next, to an actuary pricing insurance for a football team against unforeseen risks. There’s always something unique around the corner.

What sets Fortis Recruitment apart from other agencies?

I’ve had the chance to work with some really good recruitment agencies, but what truly sets Fortis apart is the team dynamic and transparency, from senior management down. As a younger business, we don’t yet have the client volume of some larger agencies, so we work incredibly hard to ensure every client is looked after and feels valued.

How do you build relationships with clients and candidates to ensure a good match?

I spend as much time as possible getting to know clients and candidates, ideally meeting them in person but virtually when necessary. For candidates, it’s crucial to understand not just their skills and experience, but also their motivations for a move. In today’s candidate-driven market, often candidates are assessing employers as much as the other way around. I also think it’s important to discuss topics beyond work, such as family or hobbies – real connections are built when we see each other as people, not just professionals.

What trends are you seeing in your sector, and how can you help your clients navigate them?

In Ireland, the broking market is going through a prolonged period of consolidation, with newer brokers all competing for top talent, pushing up salaries in the space. Attracting the best candidates requires a compelling proposition; it’s about more than salary. Factors like growth opportunities, support, work-life balance, and a clear vision all play a part in attracting and retaining talent.

What advice would you give someone looking for a new job?

Network as much as possible within your target area, and a good recruiter is an essential part of this network. Reach out on LinkedIn to people you know, whether from school, university, or sports and ask for advice or introductions. Often, it’s who you know that opens doors. A great recruiter can also offer CV and interview tips, so it’s worth cultivating these connections.

What has been a highlight for you in your recruitment career?

There have been many, but helping someone land their dream job – or at least a key step towards it – is truly rewarding. And when former candidates come back as clients, it’s an honour that shows the trust we’ve built together.

What is the most rewarding part of your job as a recruiter?

Seeing candidates I’ve placed grow into new roles. There are people I’ve placed at a junior or mid-level who are now in the C-suite. Watching someone’s career flourish over time is incredibly fulfilling.

When you’re not working hard for your clients and candidates, what do you enjoy doing outside of recruitment?

I play what I call “bad golf” – it’s very similar to regular golf, but with more zig-zags and significantly more lost golf balls! I also enjoy hiking and spending time outdoors. My two daughters keep me busy with their activities, and I recently became a cub scout leader as well.
